Riding tandem in the Netherlands

If you enjoy being active on your family vacations, consider booking a trip to the Netherlands this year. Home to over 18,000 miles of cycle paths, you and your family can rent a couple of tandems and see this beautiful European country on two wheels. Don’t miss these must-see stops for adults and kids alike on your trip to Holland:

Vondelpark

Amsterdam’s largest park is a great place to ride tandem with the kids on a sunny summer afternoon. There, you’ll cruise past birch trees and horse chestnuts, as well as famous statues by Picasso and Cuypers. When you need a break from riding, let the kids explore one of the park’s six playgrounds, enjoy an open air theater show, or test their cooking skills at the world-famous child-run Kinderkookkafé.

Vechtstreek

Heading out of the city, one of the most fascinating regions you and your family can explore is the Vechtstreek. The region is known for its grandiose mansions and castles, particularly the the Zuylen Castle and Rijksmuseum Muiderslot in Muiden. Make sure you plan a visit to give your kids a peek at life in the medieval times. You’ll also have the opportunity to enjoy some great scenery while you ride, as the region boasts some of Holland’s most beautiful lakes and idyllic meadows. Stop in at one of the fruit orchards and allow the kids to pick as many strawberries, blackberries, and apples as they can carry!

Bulb Region

If you’re already thinking about your travel plans for 2014, the Netherland’s Bulb Region is an absolute must-see for spring. Tulip season lasts from the end of March until mid-May, and during this time, the Dutch countryside comes alive with color. It’s only a fifteen-minute bike ride from the city center of Haarlem to the start of the Bulb Region. Want more? Continue on by car to Keukenhof to the world-famous bulb park. Your kids will love seeing the vibrant red, pink, and yellow tulips on display.

De Hoge Veluwe National Park

Explore the Dutch countryside with the kids with a visit to the largest conservation area in the Netherlands, De Hoge Veluwe National Park. The park is famous for its 1,700 white bicycles, which are available free of charge for you and your family to bike the grounds. The kids may be interested in a stop at the Sculpture Garden or the Museonder—a museum dedicated to the creatures that now live or used to live below the Earth’s surface. Makes for an excellent day trip with the kids.
