This year why not think about a cycling adventure with the kids! And it really is an adventure. Not only do the kids get to wear themselves out doing what they love, but mum and dad get to spend time with the kids while getting some gentle exercise and having fun.

Why not make a special day of choosing a new bike ready for the adventure. From road bikes and racers to mountain bikes and vintage bikes, there are lots of styles to choose from, and your local bike shop will have all the information you need including the right sized frame etc.

Have fun customising your bike with the kids. Maybe old fashioned wicker baskets on the front or perhaps the kids are more hip and want the latest in technology. Be sure to have all you need in case the weather changes unexpectedly. Waterproofs, hi-visibility jackets or at least a reflective armband for the kids are definitely a good idea.

And check out your local cycle network or in the area you are visiting. Many large towns and cities have now invested a lot in creating designated cycle pathways by the council. These are a really good way of seeing all the major sites and attractions along the route, whilst ensuring the safety of you and the family. And there are many pit stops along the way for you to grab a bite to eat or rehydrate with a coffee. Most are really family-friendly too so the kids will be happily entertained while you rest those legs and relax for a while.

If you’re going away on holiday for your cycling adventure, check with your hotel or accommodation with regards to storage for the bikes. You will find most places very happy to help, but also consider contacting hotels that specialise in cycle breaks for the family; you may even be able to hire bikes if you haven’t got your own bike already.

But if you’re stuck for time, or not a big fan of cycling yourself, consider children’s camps that allow the kids to go away during the holidays and enjoy a cycling adventure. Its great fun for them, yet allows you to relax or carry on with work without the disruption of the holidays. And with specially trained staff and camp facilities, you can be happy in the knowledge that they are in good hands. There are also lots of other activities to choose from, so the kids are sure to have lots of exciting things to do on their adventure holidays!
